What is the DSA?

Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) is a Government grant for UK students with disabilities who are enrolled on higher education courses.

DSA grants help meet the extra costs students can face as a result of a disability, specific learning difficulty or health condition and are aimed at helping disabled people to study on an equal basis with other students.

Grants don’t depend on your household income and it is paid on top of the standard student finance package. You don’t have to pay it back. The grant allowance is assessed on an individual basis for full-time or part-time higher education students, with more allocated to support the highest levels of need.

If you are eligible, the Disabled Students’ Allowance is worth up to £5,529 for specialist equipment for the entire course. More is available for a Non-Medical Helper (NMH) to train and support you in using the equipment or software supplied.

DSA is administered through Student Finance England, Wales and N.I. and they have provided a PDF download called: Extra help – Disabled Students’ Allowances. This leaflet gives full details of eligibility criteria and how to apply. The process can take a while, so the sooner you do this the better.

Assessment Centres

If you qualify for Disabled Students’ Allowance you will need to have a Needs Assessment. It is recommended you use one of the centres from the Disabled Students’ Allowance – Quality Assurance Group (DSA-QAG); this web page will help you find the centre nearest to you.

How iansyst help in providing DSA

iansyst Ltd is an approved Disabled Students’ Allowance – Quality Assurance Group (DSA-QAG) Assistive Technology supplier and provide specialist equipment, support and training for students who have received the DSA grant award.

With UK-wide coverage, iansyst one of the leading and most experienced DSA suppliers, meeting the needs of disabled students nationwide since 1996.

After a Needs Assessment, your Assessor or Disability Officer will determine your requirements, gather quotes from several DSA Suppliers, including iansyst and they will provide the DSA regional funding body (i.e. Student Finance England, Student Awards Agency for Scotland, or your Local Education Authority) with a report which includes the detail of equipment, training and support required to help with your disability.

iansyst provide Assessors with an online DSA quoting system or our access to our dedicated team to help generate quotes easily and efficiently, making sure your requirements are fulfilled. The funding body will choose an approved supplier and send you a letter to confirm your grant and award details.
