Many people find it difficult to access the world of books. Whether through dyslexia, visual impairment or motor difficulties, thousands of ‘would be’ readers are destined to be ‘unable to’ readers. However, commonplace technologies can transform access to books. Where librarians and publishers work together to provide digital copies to disabled users, magnification, colour change, keyboard access and text to speech can transform the reading experience giving genuine independence to the user.
Elsevier, a leading publisher of science and health information, has won the first ever JISC TechDis Publisher Lookup Award for Accessibility announced at the London Bookfair on Wednesday, 21st April 2010.

Elsevier are awarded JISC TechDis Award
The Awards recognise publishers who have excelled in changing and adapting their business processes to meet their customers accessibility needs and are the brainchild of Alistair McNaught, senior advisor at JISC TechDis. Alistair said: “Elsevier were selected from a really strong field of candidates. Judges were impressed with Elseviers response rates to customer enquiries and their strong, embedded accessibility strategy. Accessibility is a cross-management responsibility at Elsevier and evidently part of the organisational culture.”
Putting the spotlight on accessibility benefits everyone and now, thanks to the Awards, we’ve created a kind of community of practice where publishers are learning from each other.”
